12 great 2011 performances with zero Oscar chances
Not all of the most memorable big-screen turns receive legitimate (or any) buzz for the Academy Awards. That's a shame. Before the nominations are announced, here are the performances that deserve recognition regardless. -- Matt Pais

Emily Browning, 'Sleeping Beauty'
Few saw this challenging flick from Australia, and far fewer seemed to understand it. Julia Leigh's feature writing-directing debut is a fascinating exploration of the versatile meaning of people and objects, and Browning's as committed and intriguingly mysterious as the cold, disturbing material requires.
