Italy's powerhouse regions

The three regions of northeastern Italy are known colloquially as "the three Venices" ("le tre Venezie"), a name used on maps until just after World War II. Of the regions, the two farthest to the north and east — Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, as they are known today — are foremost on the wine map of Italy.
