Sure fire power
Cooks and hot sauce aficionados may want to add a Varietal Chile Extract from Virginia's Henry Family Farm to their spice collection. These extracts deliver intense flavor (much like vanilla or lemon extract would) to homemade hot sauces or to fire up curries and chilis. Handle the Fatali (aka African habanero) and Naga Jolokia (aka ghost) with care: A little extract goes a long way. Our favorite? The yellow Fatali. Bearing food-tube celeb David Rosengarten's imprimatur, a 4.9 ounce bottle is $22. At drosengarten.com.
A better burrito?
It's easy to make a decent burrito. Tougher to make a tasty frozen one. But PJ's Organics from San Francisco has come up with a line of six, including a Skinny, Traditional Chicken and 5-layer that are good tasting and good for you. Ingredients are, well, organic, non GMO, etc. Each weighs in at less than 400 calories. Our two favorites: Southwestern–Style Chicken and the Steak and Cheese. Heat in a microwave or conventional oven. The suggested retail price: $4. A store locater's at pjsorganics.com.
Nuts for coconut
Coconut is showing up in just about everything on the planet, so it's not surprising that Earth Balance has blended coconut oil into a peanut butter to create its Coconut & Peanut Spread. In creamy and crunchy versions, they're made with agave syrup, Non-GMO Project Verified and lower in sodium than some other peanut butters we checked. Slightly sweet and easy spreading, tasters enjoyed both. The suggested retail price for a 16-ounce jar is $6.25. A store locater is at earthbalancenatural.com.
